Copywriting Tips - Breaking Into The Business
Breaking into the copywriting business may be one of the hardest things in the world to do. I mean let's face it, you're going up against guys like Michel Fortin and Andrew Cavanagh, who happens to be a personal friend of mine. But just because there are some big names out there doesn't mean you can't make a name for yourself. This article is going to show you why it's possible and how you can do it.
Okay, why is it possible to break in even though you're going up against guys who are the biggest names in the business? Well, for starters, these guys weren't always the biggest names in the business. Everybody had to start somewhere. Even Michel Fortin had to be born first. But the biggest reason why you can actually compete with these guys is BECAUSE of how big they are.
Think about it...anybody going to Michel Fortin for sales copy is going to be paying $15,000 or more for that sales copy. Not every Internet marketer, especially the new ones, has that kind of money. They're going to be looking for copywriters that they CAN afford. This is where you have your chance to offer your services. Sure, you might have to write some sales copy for a few hundred dollars to start, but as you get a reputation as a good writer, you'll be able to increase your prices.
The surest way to break into copywriting is to offer your services for free to start. Take on a few clients and offer to write their sales copy for them in exchange for a testimonial. Like I said, beginning marketers who don't have a lot of money, are going to take you up on your offer. If you're a really good writer and bring them a decent amount of sales, you'll build a name for yourself very fast.
I'm not going to lie to you. Copywriting is a tough profession to break into unless you are really talented. However, if you start at the bottom and market yourself, you have a decent chance of moving up the ladder. How long it takes depends on how many projects you take on that turn out to be successful. The key here is to have confidence in yourself. If you don't believe you can write great copy then nobody else is going to believe it either. Presentation is everything and presenting yourself as a confident and competent copywriter is a big key to making it in this business.
